Drum Circles on Saturdays – New Arts Education Program

An intense cultural phenomenon has sprung up in communities all over the U.S. The impact of drum circles has been highlighted in popular publications such as Time Magazine, Prevention and Discovery. The ancient eastern community building tradition of group drumming has been found cropping up in hospitals, community centers, churches, schools, parks, streets, and art centers everywhere imaginable. This activity has been said to have benefits for the immune system, mental health, and spiritual being. Religious views are intentionally kept out of the circle. The purpose of a community drum circle stems from a realization that rhythm is a language that can unite the diverse elements of humanity. Rhythm succeeds where words fail.

Made possible by a grant from the News & Record, the High Point Area Arts Council will begin two weekly drum circle groups beginning on March 6. Drums will be provided for you. The first group will meet at 2:00 p.m. for those with little or no experience in drumming. Then, for those more experienced drummers interested in advanced rhythms, a second group will meet from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Led by Adam Bradby who has taught drum circle groups in Greensboro and Durham for more than a decade, High Point residents will most certainly have a restorative and entertaining experience.

Tuition for the drum circles is $30 per month and scholarships are available. If you would like to register for a class or would like more information, please contact Stephanie Gray, Arts Education Coordinator at 336-889-2787 ext. 23 or email at SGray@highpointarts.org.

11-13, 18-20

High Point Community Theatre will present the 2nd production of its 2009-2010 season, Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on March 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church Sanctuary, 1225 Chestnut Drive , High Point .

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father's favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt , Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel . Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

Joseph is directed by Bobby Bodford with musical direction by Michael Dougherty and choreography by Mallory Graham.

Tickets are available through the High Point Theatre Box Office, 336-887-3001 from noon to 5:00 p.m., online at www.highpointtheatre.com or at the door.
